Though it might seem simple, there’s more to natural beauty than taking the bare-faced approach. It’s about indulging your skin the right way, using authentic products made from natural ingredients for the purest care.

That’s why we’ve carefully curated a range of natural skincare, all crafted in Aotearoa. Here, one needs only to experience the stunning native bush, the gentle flowing coastline, and the majestic mountains to understand why we want to keep the goodness of nature in our offerings. But what does natural skincare really mean, and how do you make sure you’re selecting the right products?

How is natural skincare defined?

Generally speaking, natural skincare is defined as products made from natural ingredients. This means any ingredients derived from the natural elements, and is typically referring to products that don’t use many, or any other synthetic ingredients that aren’t produced naturally.

However, it’s important to note that the term ‘natural skincare’ is not regulated in New Zealand, which means there is no set definition that products must meet to qualify. Technically, any products that contain natural ingredients (such as water, for example) can claim the title of ‘natural skincare’, no matter what other harsh chemicals or additives are added. With that in mind, if you’re looking for products that contain predominantly natural skincare ingredients, it’s important not to take ‘natural skincare’ at face value.

Instead, we encourage you to look a little deeper into the ingredients going into your skincare. Whether you have a well-established skin care routine or you’ve been washing your face with the same cleanser since you were a teen, it’s important to be aware of the ingredients that are going into your skin.

That being said, we know reading a long list of ingredients that don’t mean a lot to you can feel daunting. And that’s exactly why we’re here - to carefully select a range of natural products that offer quality ingredients for healthy skin. All our offerings have been thoroughly researched and specifically chosen for their natural properties, so you can rest assured in the knowledge that you’re caring for your skin with superior natural beauty brands you can trust. And to be completely transparent, we’ll only tell you a Gift Set is 100% natural if every one of its offerings is just that.

What are some ingredients I will typically find in my natural skincare?

When exploring natural skin care from NZ, there are a few key ingredients that you might find more than others. One of our favourites is Harakeke, the Te Reo Māori name for New Zealand Flax. The Harakeke bush has long been significant in Māori culture with an extensive range of uses, including making traditional clothing, rope, woven baskets, and more. However, it is only in recent years that the benefits of the oil from the Harakeke seed have been discovered.

A natural moisturizer, Harakeke seed oil holds a wealth of potential benefits for the skin, including several anti-aging skincare ingredients such as vitamin E for its moisturising benefits, phytosterols that help ease redness and irritation, antioxidants that help fight surface free radicals, and omega fatty acids (around 20% oleic acid and 70% linoleic acid). These fatty acids have been shown to nourish the skin, making Harakeke ideal for those with dry skin types.

The Blood Orange & Harakeke Hand Cream by Real World is featured in both the Her/Their Skincare and Luxury Skincare Gift Boxes, providing lasting moisture that protects and nourishes the skin.

Another natural New Zealand ingredient you might find in natural skincare is Mānuka. Mānuka honey is collected from the native New Zealand Mānuka tree, and while it might commonly be stirred into a cup of tea when you have a sore throat, Mānuka honey is also known for its skincare benefits. Its use as an anti-inflammatory comes down to a high level of antibacterial and restorative properties, in particular Hydrogen Peroxide and Methylglyoxal.

Rich in minerals and vitamins, Mānuka honey draws moisture into the skin, nourishing deeply for long-lasting rejuvenation. Our MARYSE treatment balm features Mānuka honey as a key ingredient to soothe, heal, and restore the skin.

What are the benefits of natural ingredients vs synthetic or chemical ingredients?

When it comes to natural skin care ingredients, the benefits over synthetic or chemical products are many. As well as being kinder on your skin and being packed with nutrients that will replenish your skin in the way nature intended, natural skincare also takes into account your environmental impact on the Earth itself.

  1. You’re feeding your skin beneficial nutrients

Natural ingredients replenish your skin with a wide range of beneficial nutrients. While synthetic products may be capable of performing their function, they can also contain harsh chemicals such as parabens, dioxins, sulphates and phenols, which can be harmful to your skin.

On the other hand, natural ingredients offer a wide range of naturally occurring nutrients packed with vitamins, minerals, and compounds such Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Resveratrol, Alpha hydroxy acid, and more. Among others, natural ingredients  such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, and argan oil can help cleanse and rejuvenate your skin from the inside out.

Our Glowing Organic Facial Oil from the Skin Kitchen was handcrafted in New Zealand with 100% natural and organic ingredients, and is made from a blend of organic oils such as jojoba oil, chia seed oil, and argan oil. Free from parabens and sulphates and with no artificial colours or fragrances, this natural facial oil was created for quality, catering to all skin types regardless of sensitivity.

  2. Natural products are easier on the skin

Though dependent on the user, synthetic products with harsh chemicals can strip the skin of natural moisture and cause redness and irritation.

Natural ingredients, however, are often gentler on sensitive skin. Because several ingredients such as Mānuka honey are packed with natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, these natural ingredients protect your skin, helping it to absorb moisture and improving its barrier function for glowing skin the natural way.

Are there other reasons why natural skincare is better?

In terms of sustainability and environmental impact, natural ingredients are better for you, and better for the world around you. Derived from nature, these ingredients are often gentler on the environment than synthetic products.

Natural ingredients do not need to be manufactured, so while it still takes a fair bit of hard work and a considered effort, it is often easier for natural skincare products to reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainable, eco-friendly skincare is at the forefront of our ethos, which is why we take care to select products that are also ethically sourced and sustainably focused. At all things considered, we also look at what we can do to be more sustainably focused. Sometimes it’s the small things, like our mailers and shipping labels in New Zealand both being compostable. This means you can put all the outer packaging in your home compost bin - no need to tear off those pesky shipping labels.

Offering natural ingredients, being kinder on your skin, and being more sustainably focused are just a few of the reasons we advocate for natural skincare and other selfcare products. That’s why we’ve worked hard to curate a thoughtful, considered range of skincare offerings that are better for you, the conscious one, and the world around you.

Crafted by the artisans of Aotearoa and with a focus on sustaining the natural New Zealand ingredients that make our land so special, our gift boxes have been attentively assembled to bring you natural, quality skincare and self-care that you know has been oh-so carefully considered.
